Do not be intimidated by the Skills Checklist ... Everyone, absolutely everyone, started with a rating of zero in the beginning. The Checklist is a guide, not a test. Many members are separated or divorced people, or separated married people living apart from their spouse.  Members of SUS who subsequently marry may continue their membership, and the new spouse will be eligible to join.

LI Sound off Norwalk ~~ 2010

The Annual Dues amount is shown at the top of the Membership Application and includes a subscription to the SUS newsletter The Masthead and reduced admissions to general membership meetings and to some special events and activities.

Skippers and potential Skippers usually have a number of unique questions about participation and how things are done.  SUS offers skipper's meetings separate from regular club meetings to address these issues.

SUS members have also prepared a number of "guidelines" over time.  These guidlines suggest how you can best prepare for cruising, share in expenses and other things that a new or prospective Skipper or crew member will find useful.  These are those things that members over the years have learned by trial and error.  Experience IS the best teacher.

SUS Orientation

All new members are required to attend a Membership Orientation Class (MOC) within twelve months of joining.  The MOC is generally given before our first monthly meeting and takes about an hour.

Our Orientation meetings provide an introduction to the "In's and Out's" of how SUS operates, and give you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the Club.

At the MOC, you will receive the MOC booklet, over 40 pages of information about SUS, boating, safety, sailing, Bylaws, checklists, etc.  Included in the booklet are several pages of information on boating related course offerings in Fairfield and Westchester counties, as well as a listing of Sailing Schools in the area for those of you who want to learn more about sailing.   These lists will be updated as the season progresses, and we encourage everyone to re-enforce SUS sailing adventures with Sailing and Boating classes.

It is important for all Members to become active, contributing, participants in SUS. It's the best way for you to have season after season of great sailing, with some of the best people you may ever meet.

I’m looking forward to seeing you at your Membership Orientation Class.

SUS Educational Requirements

There are absolutely no education requirements to join SUS.  You do not have to know how to sail.  It is not necessary to ever have been on a sailboat, or any other boat.  But having a smile always helps.

However, in order to promote well being, comfort and, especially, safety for you and your shipmates, we do require that you take some education within the first twelve months of your joining.

In summary, you will be required to take:

1) a one-hour member orientation, held several times during the year immediately before a Thursday night social meeting;

2) approximately four hours of a Mariners Workshop, an introduction to sail-boating and safety, held on a dock alongside a member’s sailboat (and is often followed by an afternoon sail);

3) eight hours of an approved boating course usually given by the US Coast Guard or The Sail and Power squadron, usually given on a Saturday and, by passing the end-of-day test, you can obtain a state safe boating certificate (which, depending on your residency and other criteria, may be required by a state to operate a boat but the certificate is not required by SUS).

~~~~~
Sailing Classes and Local Courses
SUS encourages members to take the basic and advanced level courses offered by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and the US Power Squadron. Members areencouraged to take the basic course and to acquire the State of Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate or the equivalent.
As always, the SUS Board of Directors and/or the Directors of Education and Membership have the final say as to whether a member has met the SUS educational requirement
