Sailing Classes and Local Courses

SUS encourages its members to take the basic and advanced level courses offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the US Power Squadron. Each member is encouraged to take the basic course in addition to acquiring the required State of Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate.

As always, the SUS Board of Directors and/or the Director of Education has the final say as to whether an individual has met the club's educational requirements.

U. S. Coast Guard AuxiliarY Flotilla 72 OFFERS
ABC’s of SAFE boating WITH AMERICA’S BOATING COURSE

Feb. 2007:
The public has a fantastic opportunity to prepare for the upcoming boating season.   America’s Boating Course (ABC), designed to satisfy the requirements for the mandatory CT Safe Boating and Personal Watercraft Operation certificates, which are required to operate vessels on Connecticut waters, will be offered by U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 72 on several Saturdays in the coming months.

The comprehensive one day course and test, covering all major aspects of safe boating, including: types of boats, safety equipment, CT boating laws, boat handling, radio communications, and personal watercraft operation, will be offered on March 10,  March 31, and April 21 2007.

Classes are 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m. at the Dominic Lametta Training Center located near the southern end of Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk.  The ABC fee is $80.00 and includes: study guide, CD-ROM, and lunch.  Upon registering early, students have the option of receiving their course materials in advance, to make the most of class time.

To register or for additional course information, contact Peggy Bonhage, Registrar at 203-846-8471 or peggybonhage@aol.com.

For over 60 years, tens-of-thousands of men and women of the Coast Guard Auxiliary have spent millions of volunteer hours helping the Coast Guard carry out its missions.  The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is composed of uniformed, non-military volunteers who assist the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions, except for military and direct law enforcement. These men and women can be found on the nation's waterways, in the air, in classrooms and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks and public education.
